Resolve to Evolve: The One Decision that Transforms Your Life Forever

New Year’s resolutions are often empty promises based on the outside-in perspective of what we think should be. However, there is one resolution we can make that will truly transform our lives forever: to consciously further our own spiritual evolution.

“The purpose of human life is to achieve our own spiritual evolution, to get rid of negativity, to establish harmony among our physical, emotional, intellectual, and spiritual quadrants, to learn to live in harmony within the family, community nation, treating all mankind as brothers and sisters.” ~ Elisabeth Kubler-Ross

A resolution is a self-actualized answer to a prayer championed by commitment, clarity, and purpose. Specific to evolution, there is no expectation, goal to meet or number to measure up to, only a heart-and-soul curiosity to learn more about life and apply what is learned. Although an evolution may sound overwhelming, spiritual growth is the progressive wisdom gleaned through our experience one moment at a time; the cumulative effect of on-going self-discovery, thought by thought, breath by breath.

How to Start an Evolution

To propel ourselves onward and upward in spiritual evolution, we find inspiration from Hinduism and the sacred text, the Bhagavad Gita 3:3:

śhrī bhagavān uvācha

loke ’smin dvi-vidhā niṣhṭhā purā proktā mayānagha

jñāna-yogena sāṅkhyānāṁ karma-yogena yoginām

The Blessed Lord said: O sinless one, the two paths leading to enlightenment were previously explained by me: the path of knowledge, for those inclined toward contemplation, and the path of work for those inclined toward action.

Thus, we cultivate knowledge in two distinct ways – knowledge and right work.

  • Knowledge begins with self-awareness, presence, and a clear mind free of judgment. When we reflect upon an idea or situation in thought, feeling, or form, we gain the advantage of new perspectives, understanding, and the ability to use the information to make lasting change. We can do better because we know better.

  • Right work is using our gifts of time, talent, and treasure in service of self and/or others. Taking a walk is an act of lovingkindness for the self; cobbling shoes so others may walk in comfort, safety and style benefits others. The reason we participate in the transactions of the world determines the impact on our evolution.

Spiritual evolution, or enlightenment, is a conscious choice that revolutionizes how we approach daily living and attain our highest state of being while in and of the world. It is not a way to escape hardship; rather, it is a way to fulfill a purpose greater than ourselves. The more we evolve, the more we find an inexhaustible source of wisdom and positive energy that transforms the sufferings of life and generates greater love, peace, and happiness.

Gifts of a Growth-Oriented Mindset

Once we embark on a path of spiritual growth, we open ourselves to a bounty of divine gifts:

  • Hope – The eternal flame within that creates forward momentum, helping us to look beyond current circumstances to a brighter future with the conviction it will be so.

  • Freedom – The release of what tethers our spirits to a world of fear and avails us in whole to a universe of love.

  • Love – The magnetizing, creative, and expansive force of all life through which all things are possible. Love begets love.

The blessings born of spiritual evolution are endless. When we surrender to the enchantment of our own divinity, we better understand the universe and our place in it. Bit by bit, we automatically reorganize every aspect of our lives to nurture and empower the miraculous truth of who we have always been in the eyes of the Beloved.

“Before enlightenment; chop wood, carry water.

After enlightenment; chop wood, carry water.”

~ Gautama Buddha
